Cataracts
A cataract is a clouding of the lens, the
part of the eye responsible for focusing light and producing clear
images. The lens is contained in a sealed capsule. Over time the lens
begins cloud, making images look blurred or fuzzy. For most people,
cataracts are a natural result of aging.
Many
factors can cause a cataract. Exposure to ultraviolet radiation from
sunlight, cigarette smoking or the use of certain medications are risk
factors for cataract development.
When
a cataract develops to a certain point where it is affecting your daily
routine. You will be referred to an ophthalmologist for a surgical
removal of the cloudy lens and insertion of an intraocular lens.
