About Us
Our Team
Mark Hovander, Optometrist
- Started working in this office when in the 7th grade, answering the phones for his father on Saturdays.
- Began his Optometric career at University Vision Clinic in 1989
- Has completed over 70,000 vision exams, pre and post surgical exams and eye infection/disease appointments
- Comprehensive, thorough vision exams have always been a trademark of Dr. Hovander’s practice. Each vision exam includes a variety of tests including a digital scan of the interior of the eye. The initial prescriptions results are fine-tuned by having the patient’s vision checked in an actual far distance and/or near tasks exam. The resulting prescription can be used for glasses and/or converted towards contact lenses.
Paul Smith, Licensed Dispensing Optician
- Introduced to the optical field in 1994 and later became a faculty member at the Seattle Central School of Opticianry.
- Hand selects high quality ophthalmic eyeglass frames and superior lenses which provide the best optics possible for our patients since 2000.
- Provides meticulous, personalized care to produce eyeglasses which are specific to each person’s visual needs.
Richard Ackman, Contact Lens Specialist/Medical Specialist
- Started working at his father’s contact lens laboratory in 1974 where he made custom contact lenses.
- Specializes in “difficult to fit” contact lens cases, such as keratoconus and post surgical corneal transplants.
- Prefers working with independent eye doctors who provide higher quality products for their patients.
- He has served contact lens patients for over 30 years at University Vision Clinic.
About Our Founder
There would not be a University Vision Clinic without Charles Hovander, Dr. Mark Hovander’s father. Charles initially arrived at this building in 1958 and by the early 1960s he was learning how to fit contact lenses from an eye surgeon upstairs, Dr Hanna Kosterlitz. Some people say he was the first to fit a gas permeable contact lens in Seattle, but there was no doubt he later became one of Seattle’s premiere contact lens fitters. Charles was on the Washington State Board of Opticians and later taught the University of Washington’s Ophthalmology students how to fit contact lenses. He fit and modified contact lenses in our office until his retirement in 1992. The quality of his workmanship and dedication to each patient is a legacy we still carry on to this very day.
